HDA Club Champions 2022 - Karen Leavy and Rob Edwards

Well, what a fantastic weekend we had on Saturday 21 May and Sunday 22 May for the HDA Club Championship 2022.

The event was launched at the Club House on the evening of Friday 20 May with the Committee welcoming both long standing and new Members... a theme that would be repeated throughout the weekend!

We all awoke on Saturday morning to bright sunshine and teed off in handicap order - the lower handicap players enjoying a cooler round and avoiding the early afternoon breeze... those not blessed with a higher level of golfing skill had to brave the intense heat and the ever increasing wind (thats's my excuse out of the way!!!).

And, as is the 'norm' in stroke play, there was a wide spread of scoring... with at least one player describing the debacle of 14 shots on a single hole!!!

At the other end of the spectrum, Rob Edwards donated a surprise €50 voucher for any 2s on the opening day and we had a couple of worthy winners. Tam Henderson posted one 2... but Gary Sherwood recorded a quite incredible 'Desmond'... his 'two 2s' included an incredible eagle 2 at the second hole - great work fella.

As the opening day came to an end those of us with scores to forget, gathered on the Club House balcony for mass commiseration and contemplation of what was to follow on day two.

Unlike the 'armageddon' of the second day of the Club Championship last year... on Sunday morning, we were once again greeted by early morning sun. Some players with good scores had high expectations of what could be - others were nursing mild to serious hangover symptoms as a result of their first days score or the post game 'warm-down'.

In any event we were off and running... and some of the scoring was good!

In the Men's Gross Category Gareth Woolnough completed a two day total of 160 to claim the runner-up prize of a €50 voucher. However, in keeping with our new Members theme, Rob Edwards won the 2022 HDA Men's Club Champion title with a superb two round total of 149. Rob collected the Men's Club Championship Trophy and a €75 voucher. Congratulations Rob... I think there maybe more to come in the future!

In the Ladies Gross Category, Sue Hill stormed to the runners-up spot with a superb two round score of 188... however it was long standing Member Karen Leavy who blew the field away with a fantastic score of 170 to become the 2022 HDA Ladies Club Champion. Incredibly, this is the sixth title for Karen... a true legend here at HDA!!! Karen collected the Ladies Club Championship Trophy and a €75 voucher.

Christine Faulkner won the Ladies Nett Category with a two round nett score of 136... Christine collected the winners trophy and a €50 voucher from Sue Winder. Runner-up was Sue Winder who received a €30 voucher for her combined nett score of 145. Special mention to Sue Hill with an excellent nett 142... but she had already claimed the runner-up spot in the gross category!

We also had 'nearest to the pin' on both days, with each winner receiving a sleeve of balls from 'veteran' golfer Ian Shrimpton!

Day one - Sue Hill hole 5 and Tim Shilling hole 8.

Day two - Steve Hosking hole 12 (who converted the put for his first ever two in a competition here at HDA!!!) and 'new girl' Ingrid Klaris on hole 15!

A big 'thank you' to everyone who took part in the Club Championship... and helped to create such a special event.

Particular thanks to Rosa for her fantastic support in the Pro Shop, Danni and UGOLF for allowing us full access to the course and the Club House staff for the excellent paella and Après golf service!
